Another brewery on the Westside of the state that is making high quality beer at a ridiculous pace is Odd Side Ales. They opened in 2010 inside the historic piano factory in Grand Haven, Michigan and have been making quite the name for themselves over the last 14 years.
After they opened the brewery they were so busy that they very quickly outgrew the brewing capacity of their pub. After multiple expansions over the years, 3 of them to be exact. They now brew from their very own 44,000 square foot facility. This is where they make all of their products for statewide distribution and beyond. Odd Side can be found in multiple states outside of our home state of Michigan, and they are always going further and further every year.
Once inside the brewery for their seating arrangements they have a very long bar that seats approximately 30 people, maybe even more at it. That is a lot of bar space for thirsty beer travelers like myself. There are a ton of tables spread around the taproom for you and your friends drinking experience. Odd Side even has a smaller outdoor seating area, just in case you want to breathe in that fresh Lake Michigan air, you are in Grand Haven afterall.
Odd Side does offer events at the brewery such as live music, a Sunday night shakedown, trivia on Mondays and various others. Check their socials and website to see if any events will be happening during your visit. They do offer a private event rental space that has a capacity of 40. The space is not available from memorial day to labor day due to it being the busy season in Grand Haven. Contact the brewery to plan your next event.
Odd Side does not offer food or a kitchen but they do allow you to bring in outside food or have food delivered at all times. They do offer a few places on their website that offer delivery to the brewery, but any food is welcomed and encouraged.
Some of their non beer options include Wine, Seltzer, Cider, Oddtails, and Craft Cocktails. They also operate Sidebar, which is a coffee shop in the facility. Sidebar obviously offers coffee, in addition to espresso, lattes, smoothies, hot chocolate drinks and more. In good news Sidebar is open from 7:30 A.M. until 5 P.M., everyday.
We have arrived at my favorite part of the review, the delicious beverage that we all know and love, the beer. I have tried hundreds of different beers from Odd Side over the years. Some of my favorites include Side Bar- Coffee Stout, Double Black Citra- Black IPA, Double Dank Juice- Double Hazy IPA, Krispy Boiz- Pale Ale, Grand River Nut Brown, Bror Beer- IPL, Firefly- Pale Ale, Nihilist- Double IPA, and too many more to name, this review would be pages long if I named every beer from them that I enjoy.
Being a big fan of the TV show, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, they also have a bunch of beers that reference the show. These beers include The Implication- Triple IPA, Ocular Patdown- Vanilla Coffee Stout, The Nightman Leaveth- Milk Stout, Rum Ham- Stout, Cat In The Wall- Hazy IPA, Fight Milk- Milk Stout, Troll Toll- Session IPA, Shadynasty’s- IPA, and quite a few more that are named after It’s Always Sunny.
But the beers that I enjoy the most from Odd Side are their outstanding options of Bourbon Barrel Aged and Imperial Stouts that they make. The Hipster Brunch Stout and all of its many variations are absolutely delicious. Other delicious Stouts that they have made over the years include Banana Nut French Toast, Bourbon Barrel-Aged Oatmeal Cookie, Deleterious, Bourbon Baller Stout, Bluegrass Breakfast, Bombon de la Muerte, and one of my personal favorites, Bourbon Maple Wishes and Pecan Dreams. I could go on for days about their stouts, but I try to keep reviews relatively short. I will say this, Odd Side is on a very short list of places that have the best Bourbon Barrel-Aging program in the state, and they definitely have a valid argument for being the very best in this category that our State has to offer.
If you find yourself out in the Grand Haven area and you are looking to drink from a brewery that has become synonymous with great beer in the State of Michigan, Odd Side Ales will be right up your alley. I will never be disappointed when I get to go to Odd Side, something delicious will always be awaiting me upon my arrival. Cheers!
