Want to head to the most Southwestern brewery in all of Michigan? Look no further than Beer Church Brewing Company in New Buffalo, Michigan. Located just a couple of minutes North of the Indiana border, they have been serving up suds to their community since 2017, and they have set up quite the operation in that time.
The building the brewery is housed in was originally built as a church in 1861. This church was recognized as the oldest continuously running religious house in New Buffalo, until the Waters Edge United Methodist Church moved out in December of 2014. So for the first 153 years of this building standing it was a church, that is a long time for a building to be operating as one entity. After extensive renovations they opened in 2017 and have been operating as Beer Church Brewing Company for the last 7 years.
When it comes to the brewery itself, there are multiple bars scattered throughout the facility. Right when you walk in the front door there is a decent sized bar right to your left with approximately 10 seats for thirsty patrons. Then there are plenty of tables arranged throughout the building for your drinking and dining pleasure.
This place has a massive outdoor seating area. There is another bar outside that seats another 15 or so beer drinkers. Then they have an enormous heated outdoor beer garden. The website of Beer Church Brewing Company states that it is the largest outside bar with outdoor seating in all of Michigan. The brewery does host private events also, so contact the brewery to book your next big celebration.
When it comes to food at Beer Church they have both a brunch and a dinner menu. Some of the things they offer on their brunch menu includes homemade waffles, breakfast scrambles, biscuits and gravy, carbonara, breakfast sandwiches and more. When it comes to their dinner menu the options include small plates and salads, wood fired sandwiches and their highly acclaimed wood fired pizza Napoletana. In addition they have a kids menu and serve up various types of Gelato for dessert.
Is there someone in your group that doesn’t like beer? Beer Church does offer a variety of different Cocktails, some Seltzers and a selection of various Wines. For the kids or the friend that chooses not to drink there are a few options for soda, and other non-carbonated beverages.
There is something I am supposed to talk about at this point in the review…….What could it possibly be????? Oh, that’s right, the Beer is what I am going to talk about. Now it has been a while since my last visit to Beer Church, half of the beers I tried (Scarborough Flair- Spiced Beer, This Slaps Fire- Hazy Pale Ale, and Whittaker Strasse- Amber), aren’t brewed anymore. But luckily I did try a few that are their flagships, the Crooked Cross- Cream Ale, and the Pontius Pilate- Hazy IPA. Both of these flagships were fantastic and I understand why they have stayed on the menu since my visit.
But now I am going to get weird with it, they had one other flagship on tap that is still on tap to this day. I am not going to do a review of a beer today, but I will be reviewing their Frizzante Duro, which is their Hard Seltzer. Shhhhh……don’t tell anyone that the beer guy is reviewing a Seltzer, it might just ruin my reputation. They do offer different variations on the Seltzer throughout the year, and the version that we tried was made with 300 pounds of mango puree. It was a slight golden color, and it was crisp, clean and had a slight sweetness from the fruit addition. At 6.0% ABV, this is a great sipper for a day hanging out on the beautiful beaches of Lake Michigan.
If you have sinned recently, pull up a seat at the altar and pray to the beer gods at Beer Church Brewing Company, you will be absolved of your sins in no time. Cheers!
