Last week I found myself in the Lansing area while Christmas shopping. With a bit of extra time on my hands, I stopped by EagleMonk Pub and Brewery to grab a few cans to go. EagleMonk’s Facebook page advertised their Delta Porter as the newest beer on tap, so I grabbed a can of it, along with a few others to drink while wrapping gifts.

EagleMonk has been on my radar since I sampled their All Night IPA and Raspberry Kolsch at Potter Park Zoo’s Wine & Stein in May of 2019. I enjoyed both beers, and was happy to stop in.

While cashing out, I noticed a handful of awards above the bar including “2020 Brewer of the Year” from Lansing’s City Pulse Top of the Town. The Lansing area has a lot of well known breweries that come to mind, so for EagleMonk’s Dan Buonodono to be recognized as the best for 2020, I was looking forward to drinking his beer. EagleMonk was also named the second best brewery and runner up for the best pub/tavern.

Once I poured the Delta Porter into my glass, the color and nose of the beer screamed “I’m a porter!” Each sip had a soft mouthfeel with rich roasty chocolate notes. I thoroughly enjoyed the porter and thought it would be a quality companion in EagleMonk’s backyard where other patrons were sipping on brews or around a fire during the winter months. I also thought the beer could be a good base beer for adjuncts or barrel aging.

It looks like Dan has already played with the Delta Porter. According to Untappd, Delta Porter has had coffee and jalapeños added to it on separate occasions and has been barrel aged and on cask. Looks like I will need to stop by again to grab more Delta Porter and its variants this award winning brewer has up his sleeve.

Cheers!

Ed Norton

Edwin "Ed" Norton was first introduced to craft beer when his designated fraternity Big Brother Vince asked him if he knew anything about the topic. Ed admitted his ignorance and the rest is history as Ed and Vince would split six-packs of craft beers each week during Ed's probationary status. Ed is now a craft beer enthusiast who is always on the lookout for a beer he has not tried when bottle shopping or drinking at breweries and bars. In addition to drinking beer, this livelong Michigan resident enjoys a bunch of hobbies that he doubts you really care about, other than drinking beer and sounding off about it.
