A few years ago on a trip to England, I came across a familiar name at a small pub: Tetley’s. I knew the name as a brand of tea, but in this particular case, the name was attached to a beer. My interest was piqued, and I had to have a pint.

I’m embarrassed to say I was surprised when this cask ale tasted like, well, tea, specifically Earl Grey. The beer itself was good – drinkable, sure – but even though I enjoy a cup of tea every now and then, the flavor was so distracting that I made that my last Tetley’s pint.

When I had a can of Mikkeller‘s Weird Weather Non-Alcoholic Hazy IPA, I was confronted with a familiar flavor: tea. This beer resembled my single Tetley’s cask ale experience that I had to squint at the can and make sure I wasn’t being pranked.

Nope. Definitely Mikkeller.

Mikkeller isn’t a brewery that’s on my radar a lot, but I’m always willing to give things a try. Weird Weather was pretty tasty. In fact, the more I drank it, the more I enjoyed it. It was a pale, hazy yellow in color with a low but fluffy head. The head gave way to a smooth, lemony flavor with a slightly oily finish. There was almost no bitterness or carbonation in this beer, which – in addition to its very noticeable tea flavor – was reminiscent of a cup of Earl Grey on a cold afternoon.

I’m always looking for more non-alcoholic beers to add to my fridge. This is one I’d recommend. At $3.50 a can (where I purchased it), it’s a pretty big investment, but if non-alcoholic (less than 0.5% ABV) is the goal, then Weird Weather has it covered. Easy drinking, refreshing lemon tea, and a sunny, hazy IPA appearance? It’s worth the investment!
