Whenever I have gone to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, it has been because of a Michigan Brewers Guild U.P. Fall Beer Festival. On the way home from the 2021 beer festival, a stop was made at Rusted Spoke Brewing Co in Mackinaw City, MI.

I had heard Rusted Spoke had good BBQ and made their own brews, so I was intrigued because you can’t go wrong with that combination. Prior to ordering a flight of beers, though, I had to laugh at a few of the in-house beer names. The flight that I ordered included BeetleJuice, Epstein Didn’t Kill Himself, Dieter’s Schnitzel, and Michigangster. Bonus points for creative names, that’s for sure.

The food checked out as being delicious. I enjoyed a grilled cheese pulled pork sandwich and tater tots. The winning beer of the flight was Michigangster, a fruity wheat beer. It was so good that I bought a crowler to take home and review.

Michigangster was the most approachable on the beer flight and reminded me of one final glimpse of summer. It had a soft mouth feel that felt just right for a hot afternoon or evening. The beer featured to two Michigan crops – peaches and cherries – which worked extremely well together. The cherry hit on the nose and front end of the beer, while the peach was on the back end. At 4.5% and 8 IBUs there was nothing in my way from crushing the entire crowler.

The variety of beers available at Rusted Spoke was impressive. The brew pub had a little bit of something from all over the United States and, again, had a few eye catching names. The only beer I wasn’t able to try during my visit was Boats N’ Hoes. Hopefully it and Michigangster will be on draft when I visit again in the future.

Cheers!

Ed Norton

Edwin "Ed" Norton was first introduced to craft beer when his designated fraternity Big Brother Vince asked him if he knew anything about the topic. Ed admitted his ignorance and the rest is history as Ed and Vince would split six-packs of craft beers each week during Ed's probationary status. Ed is now a craft beer enthusiast who is always on the lookout for a beer he has not tried when bottle shopping or drinking at breweries and bars. In addition to drinking beer, this livelong Michigan resident enjoys a bunch of hobbies that he doubts you really care about, other than drinking beer and sounding off about it.
