Tonight I took a rare Thursday night off to go to a comedy show in Downtown Detroit. So of course in order to pregame for the comedy show, Crystal and I decided to hit a few breweries along the way. I will divide today’s adventure up into a 3 or 4 part post over the next few days, highlighting what we had at each brewery we stopped at on our visit to Detroit.

First up on our stops is my personal favorite brewery in all of Detroit, Brewery Faisan, which is just East of Downtown Detroit proper. Brewery Faisan is located in the Islandview Neighborhood of Detroit. I have been easily a dozen times over the 5 years that they have been in business, this is one brewery that I can’t get enough of their beers. Their taplist was full of some of my personal favorites including their Pizza Pie Pils- Italian Pilsner, King Eider- Dubbel, Landfowl- Hoppy Kolsch, and many more.

I ran into a familiar face at Brewery Faisan upon our arrival, friend and follower of the page Skip Elmer, we chatted for a few minutes about the grand opening of his brewery in Detroit which will be coming up hopefully very soon, Full Measure Brewing Company (More on them at a later date).

As for the beer at Faisan, I ended up choosing to have their Sympathy For The Abyss, which is a Black IPA. As we all remember from earlier this week, I can never turn down a Black IPA and as an added bonus, this was a beer that I had never had from Brewery Faisan. It was a little sweeter in my opinion than I like a Black IPA to be, but it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. It still has quite the hop and malt presence to it and finishes smoothly with a nice bitterness from the hop characteristics. This one checks in at 6.0% ABV, so this is a little lower on the ABV scale than you will see from most Black IPAs, so you can enjoy a couple before it starts to catch up to you and I would totally recommend that you do so if you are in the area.

Crystal got one of my favorites from Brewery Faisan and that is their No Egrets, which is a Coffee Stout. This is a fantastic beer that tastes exactly like you are drinking a cup of coffee. It is dark, malty, and has a very roasty flavor brought on from the coffee that they use when making the beer. This beer finishes fantastically smooth and checking in at 7.2% ABV, this is one that will catch up to you very fast if you aren’t paying attention. Enjoy this one, but enjoy it responsibly.

We decided that we couldn’t leave Brewery Faisan without having at least one more, so I settled on one of my all-time favorites from them, the Spy Catcher which is a Czech Dark Lager. I absolutely love this beer, even though it is dark in color, it drinks very light and goes down just as easily as any light beer you will ever come across. Its flavor profile includes a little bit of Nuttiness with some slight roasty flavors and it finishes with just a small trace of sweetness to it. This beer clocks in at 5.0% ABV, so enjoy a few of them if you would like and trust me if you enjoy a great Czech Dark Lager, you will want to have a few of these.

Well that will be all for today on our Thursday trip down to Detroit. Catch up with the rest of our trip over the next few days, I am packing up my laptop and we are going to continue our journey by heading over to the Eastern Market area of Detroit and hitting up Lagerhaus #5, and Eastern Market Brewing Company before the show tonight. Cheers!
