The next stop on the brewery review tour will take us up to beautiful Ludington, Michigan and Starving Artist Brewing Company. This brewery is just East of downtown Ludington and maybe a half mile South of M-10. They have been around for quite a while now, they opened in June of 2015, and have been serving superb beer ever since. I have had their beer multiple times in the past but I had never made it up there until just recently.

Starving Artist Brewing Company is in an old barn behind what I assume is the owner’s house. When you are pulling in there is a little sign with an arrow that says brewery, otherwise I would have assumed I was in the wrong place. But there is definitely a brewery in the barn behind the house. It is very nicely kept and a very clean area. There is also no smoking on the property if you do end up going, and are a smoker. Just a friendly heads up.

I walked up to the door of the barn which is where you place your beer order. The only seating that they have is a very small seating area outside the barn, I am assuming most people probably just stand but there is some seating. I was greeted by the owners Andy and Mike, who are two of the coolest guys I have met on my travels by the way. They immediately started talking and asking questions about the beers that I like and what I normally like to drink. I told them I don’t discriminate when it comes to beer, unless it has coconut……I’m highly allergic. They do not offer flights but they will offer you samples so that you don’t get stuck with a beer you dislike.

I ended up just diving right in and getting a full pour of their Zombie Dinosaurs IPA, which was a nice American IPA made with citra hops. Slight bitterness from the hops, but very smooth and easy drinking. Could very easily make a day of drinking these, but I would have to take my time because it does clock in at 7.5%. I also ended up having a smaller pour of their slims cream ale, which was very nice, smooth, and creamy. I ended up getting a 6 pack of it to take home with me. I think I still have a few in the fridge, all this typing is really making me thirsty. Be right back.

While I was drinking my beer Andy and Mike kept chatting with me, and found out that they had taken a few classes at Liberty Street back in the day, so we had that connection. We used our connection to chat for about an hour, and during that hour they kept feeding me samples of everything on the menu. Everything on the menu was stellar and at the end of me trying everything they looked at me and said, “Man I wish you had come when we had good beer on the menu.” If the beers that they had on tap were not “good” beers, I can’t wait to go back and try some of their other beers because I can’t imagine that it can get much better than what was served to me while I was there. If it does get better next time I go back, I may have died and woke up in beer heaven.

So next time you are in the Ludington, Michigan area and looking for a great beer to drink served by even greater people, find your way over to Starving Artist Brewing Company. That is one decision that you definitely will not regret. The only thing that I regret about Starving Artist Brewing Company is that I didn’t visit sooner and more often. Anyone want to go on a road trip to Ludington anytime soon?
