Well tonight felt like a good night for a new iteration of Steve After Dark. Tonight we went out to dinner and our choice was Mexican food for the evening. The food was delicious but the Margaritas tasted like watered down cheap well Tequila. There was no sweetness to it and was overall the worst Margarita I have tasted in my entire life. I don’t want to throw the restaurant under the bus publicly for their Margarita since the food was very good. If you come into the brewery tomorrow afternoon and see me, I might be persuaded to tell you the name of the Mexican restaurant that was guilty of making an absolutely terrible Margarita.

Anyways, since this is a beer page, we won’t continue talking about awful Margaritas. The Margarita did make me have to wash the terrible taste out of my mouth when I got home and that is where today’s segment comes into play.

Today we are going to do a double beer review. Both of the beers come from Odd Side Ales out of Grand Haven. The first beer that we are going to review was given to me by a customer at the brewery and came highly recommended by them. It is beer so of course I had to give it a try.

The first beer I am going to review is Odd Side’s Strawberry Daiquiri Dank Juice which is part of their Cocktail series of Dank Juice. It is a Double Dry Hopped IPA with Citra and Amarillo hops with Strawberries and Lime added. This beer checks in at 6.75% ABV. For me personally, I wish it had a little more of a Strawberry Daiquiri flavor to it. With that said, it has a slight Strawberry flavor to it and a slight hint of lime. The hops do shine through on this one, where you can definitely tell that this is an IPA. The hop bitterness to it overpowers the other flavors in my opinion but it is still very drinkable as an IPA. Although I will enjoy the rest of it, this is probably not a beer that I would rush out and buy more of. There is definitely a market for this kind of beer, I am just not the target audience. Just a friendly reminder, not every beer is meant for everyone and that is absolutely fine.

The Second Beer that I am going to review is a beer from Odd Side that I very much enjoy, so much so that I have bought two different liquor stores out of their supplies of it over the last 2 weeks. I love a great Dry Irish Stout, and this is definitely the season for Dry Irish Stouts. I was initially drawn to this beer because I am a huge fan of the TV show, It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, and Odd Side names quite a few of their beers after this show. The beer I am going to talk about is the McPoyle’s Family Reserve.

For those of you that don’t watch It’s Always Sunny, you might not appreciate or understand this part of the review, trust me I didn’t get really weird on you, this will just be loaded with references to the show. For those of you that watch and appreciate the show, as Frank says, “Let’s get weird with it”.

I sat down in my whitey tighties and my bathrobe with my uni-browed, mute sister Margaret and we poured a glass of milk to have with our McPoyle’s Family Reserve- Dry Irish Stout. (Note to Odd Side, you really should have saved this name for a Milk Stout, but I know you guys have Fight Milk already, Cheers!) This beer is almost as pitch black as my brother Ryan’s hair, has a slight roasty flavor to it from the dark malts that are used in this beer and it finishes very dry. This beer is perfect for any of your St. Patrick’s Day celebrations such as stabbing your brother in the back or keeping your family pure for over 1,000 years. This beer checks in at 5.8% ABV, so you can enjoy a few of them before making out with Margaret sounds like a great idea. To be fair, being a McPoyle, making out with Margaret always sounds like a good idea……Bump it……No seriously don’t leave me hanging……Bump it.

When this spring or summer rolls around, if you are looking to have an IPA with a little more fruit characteristics to it, go ahead and give Odd Side’s Strawberry Daiquiri Dank Juice a shot. Just because it wasn’t my thing doesn’t mean that you won’t enjoy it. If you are looking to enjoy a great St. Patrick’s Day beer, check out Mcpoyle’s Family Reserve- Dry Irish Stout (Just don’t go looking for it at Livonia Liquor & Fine Wine or Super Fine Wine & Liquor, they are sold out, trust me I know lol). This will conclude this iteration of Steve After Dark, if you enjoyed this review……Bump it…..Cheers!
