With the awesome weather we had outside yesterday afternoon, me having a day off after a very long weekend of work and Crystal taking a vacation day from her job. We decided to go and hit a few places and indulge in a couple of beverages to celebrate the beautiful day.
Monday is a difficult day of the week to decide to hit breweries, a lot of them are closed on Monday. So since we were trying to keep it local, we went and started our afternoon at HopCat Livonia. We each ordered a beverage and surprisingly I started with a Cider from Blake’s Hard Cider Company and it was their Peanut Butter Triple Jam. This Cider appealed to me because of the addition of Peanut Butter, I could smell the Peanut Butter but I couldn’t really taste much of it. It just kind of tasted like a regular Blake’s Triple Jam to me. Crystal insisted that she could taste the Peanut Butter, I think maybe it was an after effect of the beer she ended up ordering.
Crystal ordered the Candy Apple Smolverine from Transient Artisan Ales. This beer actually had a nice Peanut Butter Flavor to it. The beer also had notes of Vanilla, Apple and Cinnamon to go along with the Peanut Butter flavor. It is labeled as a Sour Ale and although not very sour, it was still a very delicious beer. Checking in at 4.5% ABV, this is a beer that you can have multiple of without feeling guilty about it. I was very curious as to how this beer has such a low Untappd rating, the average rating was a 3.14…..If that is the factor that is keeping you from trying it, I recommend ignoring that rating, this beer is very delicious.
Before we left Hopcat, we decided that we were going to split one more beer. We tried a sample of the Eastern Market Brewing Company Chocolate Cream: Paczki Beer. It was decent, but not exactly what I was looking for at the time. We ended up splitting a pour of a very good stand-by beer, which was the Porter from Ore Dock Brewing Company out of Marquette. It is roasty from the coffee notes in the beer, although it is dark it is very light-bodied and finishes very smooth. This Porter checks in at 5.6% ABV, so enjoy a couple in a sitting if you wish to do so. Like I said earlier, if this is on tap, I consider this beer a good option at any time.
After cashing out at Hopcat, we decided to come and visit our friends at Heights Brewing Company in Farmington. We were greeted by friend and follower of the page, Lindsay Willey as she was bartending for the evening. I was delighted to see that they had one of my favorite beers that they make on tap upon our arrival, New You- Black IPA. I ordered one immediately. If you have followed the page for a while now, you know that I am a sucker for a good Black IPA. The New You is a very good example of a Black IPA. It is hoppy, bitter, and has the roast and malt characteristics that you expect from a great Black IPA. I love this beer but it requires approaching with caution, it clocks in at 7.6% ABV, so enjoy this one responsibly.
Crystal decided to go real light at Heights and ordered their Cranberry Seltzer. I am not too big on Seltzers myself, so I was indifferent about it. You can taste the Cranberry in it for sure but Seltzers are just not my thing. I would recommend it for anyone that can appreciate Seltzers though and it checks in at 4.6% ABV, so you can enjoy a few of them on a nice warm spring or summer day for sure.
After we finished our beverages at Heights, we figured that we should maybe pack it in and start heading home but not before we decided to stop off at Green Lantern and pick up a pizza on the way home. I have had quite a few people recommend their pizza while I have been bartending and we had never tried it until yesterday. Since we were in the area we picked up a Sausage and Pepperoni Deep Dish Pizza along with an order of Cheese Bread and an Antipasto Salad. The food at Green Lantern did not disappoint, all of it was absolutely delicious, the only negative that I could possibly say, I wasn’t a huge fan of the sausage they use on their pizza. Other than that, it was a very great pizza. The salad came with more toppings than lettuce, which is always a plus in my book and our order weighed like 10 pounds. This left us plenty of leftovers so that I can have something to eat while I work behind the bar today at Bearded Lamb Brewing Company.
After all the visiting of local spots and supporting local businesses throughout the day we decided to check back into our house for the night for a night of television and to enjoy our pizza, we started rewatching Righteous Gemstones to refresh our memories before we start the new season. All in all, yesterday I didn’t even have to use my AK, I would say it was a good day. Cheers!
