Are you heading up North anytime soon? Are you taking U.S. 127 to get there? If so, a stop in Clare, MI might be in order. Do you normally just stop in Clare to get delicious pastry treats from the world famous Cops and Doughnuts? Well right across the street from them is Four Leaf Brewing Company. Four Leaf was opened in August of 2015 and has been making solid beers ever since.

I used to visit quite often right after they opened, Crystal’s family is from the area, so we used to stop in from time to time. But in order to visit every brewery in the state, we hadn’t been in quite a few years. We ended up finally making it back last weekend while we were visiting friends in the area. They have done some remodeling since the last time we visited.

Four Leaf Brewing is a nice, cozy, small town brewery tucked into downtown Clare. They have a smaller bar area that seats about 8 to 10 people, and a decent size dining area with approximately 20 or so tables to sit down and enjoy some food and drinks at. Although we did not eat while we were there, they do have a kitchen with a full menu, just in case you want something to eat. They were also promoting a lot of live events like comedy, trivia and live music. There was nothing going on the night we were there but it looked like a great place to go on a date or to just hang out with your friends and family during a show.

An interesting tie in to a review from the other day, their brewer ended up taking the summer off so that he could go up and be the head brewer at Whiskey Point Brewing Company on Beaver Island for the season. The owners were talking about going up to visit him the following weekend while we were at the bar. The owners and the staff at the bar were very attentive and friendly down to Earth people.

While we were there we ended up getting a flight of their beers to try a few different things since we hadn’t been in a while. They had about 12 beers on tap, and four ciders on rap, but after a long day of BBQing and having a few beverages, we weren’t going to be able to sample everything and safely drive to our destination. We ended up settling on a flight of four. The four beers we got were the Liberty Road Cream Ale, the biere de garde, the Hazy Hydra Hazy IPA, and the Coal Cracker Stout. All of the beers were really good, but my personal favorite was the Coal Cracker Stout. It was dark, smooth, creamy, and very easy drinking. I would enjoy drinking a few of these around a bonfire in the fall. The Cream Ale was also light, crisp, and easy drinking. It would be a great choice of beer for almost any outdoor summer activity.

Next time you are heading up North and want to make a pit stop for a beer or two, head on into Four Leaf Brewing Company and get a few of the tastiest beers you will find in Mid Michigan.
