A relatively new face on the brewing scene in Metro Detroit, Heights Brewing Company was established in 2021, but did not open their doors to the public until February of this year. They are located in Downtown Farmington on the corner of Farmington Road and Grand River Avenue, they are right around the corner from Farmington Brewing Company.
This Sunday was my third visit to Heights and it was by far the best visit to Heights Brewing to date. The first time we went to Heights was their opening weekend, and they were having issues with their beer supply and temperature control issues, they only had 4 beers on tap when we arrived and they were not exactly cold either. The second time I visited was just a few weeks later and the beer was cold, but the beer didn’t seem to be carbonated well, but it had really great flavors.
Third time’s a charm and the beer was cold and carbonated this time around, and very delicious. Like I have said before, always give places another shot if you go right after they open, not everyone has everything figured out during their grand opening.
I have met the owners Ryan and his wife Shawn on a few occasions. They are both very nice, down to earth people. To be fair, the only reason I remember Ryan’s name is because he shares a name with Ryan Lamb the owner of Bearded Lamb, so I was calling them the two Ryan’s on his visit to Bearded Lamb. I also met Ryan during the opening weekend at Heights Brewing when he came around the brewery greeting customers and checking in on their experience.
Now when it comes to the brewery itself, there is a nice long bar that can easily seat about 20 to 25 people. They also have about 15 to 20 tables scattered throughout the building for seating with friends or to enjoy a meal at. I do not believe that they have an outdoor seating area, but if they do it would be out back and I am not aware of it.
They do offer food at the brewery, and they specialize in BBQ platters and sandwiches of different varieties. They offer brisket, pulled pork, shredded chicken and ribs. They do offer quite a few gluten free options and a few vegetarian options on their menu as well.
As far as the beer goes, they do offer quite a few options ranging from light and easy to dark and heavy. In addition to the beer they do offer seltzer, cider, and various non-alcoholic options on the menu. We ended up getting our obligatory flight on Sunday and we leaned a little more dark this time around. We got the 1824 IPA- IPA, Fifty Sour- Sour Beer, Little Explorer- Coffee Stout, and Smors Vor’s- Russian Imperial Stout.
My favorite beer of the flight was The New You- Black IPA. I absolutely love a great Black IPA, it is definitely my favorite style of IPA. It was dark, roasty, and very hoppy. It was a well-balanced Black IPA and coming in at 6.8% and 112 IBU’s it is not a beer that will appeal to everyone. But if you enjoy a good Black IPA, stop in and grab yourself a pint or two.
I grabbed a pint after our flight and ended up taking a growler home with me also. But if you do grab a growler, just a heads up growler fills are a little more on the pricey side than most breweries. It essentially costs the exact same price as getting four pints at the brewery.
Our server for the afternoon was Lindsay Willey, who not only follows the page, but I know her very well from her days working at Supernatural Brewing and Spirits. She always provides excellent service and is a nice, kind person to be around. She even agreed to be a part of this post, so take a look at her picture and keep an eye out for her on your visit to Heights, maybe she will be your server. You rock Lindsay and we will see you again sometime soon.
If you are in Downtown Farmington and looking for a great new place to sit down and enjoy a couple of pints with some good people, drop in to Heights Brewing Company and take your drinking experience to a new level or shall I say new heights. Prost!
