Just a few blocks down the street from yesterday’s review lies Blackrocks Brewery. They opened the doors to their taproom in 2010, and what started as a modest operation has blossomed into one of the most recognizable beer brands that we have to offer in the state of Michigan over the last 14 years.
In addition to their taproom, the demand for their beer has gotten to be so much that they opened a 20 barrel production facility in Marquette. So good news, if you can’t make it to the taproom itself, they distribute their products all over the state of Michigan, so check your local beer store. I am pretty sure most stores carry the Blackrocks line of beers. If your local store does not, they have a beer locator on their website which will direct you to a store in your area that does carry their products.
When it comes to seating at the brewery, there is lots of it. The bar area was not seating people on our visit, probably due to it being busy for the Fall Beer Festival the next day. From the pictures of the place online, it does seem like they allow seating at the bar during regular business patterns (This was my first and only trip to Blackrocks in my life so far). There is a plethora of tables and chairs throughout both the up and downstairs areas of the brewery. There is an outdoor seating section on the roof of the building. Also there is a massive biergarten in the back of the brewery with a lot of various seating options. There are also multiple bars throughout the building that you can acquire beverages from.
Blackrocks Brewery is also home to live musical performances, and other celebrations such as their yearly Oktoberfest party which is hosted in the biergarten and throughout the brewery. I could not find a definitive answer during my research as to whether or not they have space available for private event rentals. I would assume with the amount of room that they have in the place, that they do allow private events, but I can’t say for sure. Contact the brewery to check availability and to book private events.
Blackrocks does not offer a kitchen on site, but they are known to have food trucks frequent their establishment on a consistent basis. Check their website or their social media outlets to find out what kind of food might be on the menu during your visit. You can also bring in your own food if they don’t have a food truck or none of the food truck options are what you are craving.
Now we have gotten to the fun part of the review, the beer. Blackrocks has become known for a multitude of beverages that they serve throughout the year. From year round offerings such as the 51K- IPA, Mykiss- IPA, and Grand Rabbits- Dry Hopped Cream Ale. Seasonal offerings include- North Third- Foreign Export Stout, Ray’s Fiesta Time- Mexican Lager, Oktoberfest- Marzen and many more quality options that they put out yearly.
But my favorite beer from Blackrocks has to be their Super Deluxe which is a Helles Lager. This beer is very light-bodied with a malty, bready aroma and a slight hint of floral spiciness from the hops used in it. The beer finishes crisp and super clean like a good German Lager should. Since this bad boy only checks in at 4.9% ABV, this is an all day drinker that would be great for any outdoor activity that Michigan’s Upper Peninsula can throw your way. I highly recommend this beer if you are looking for a nice sessionable Lager.
No trip to Marquette and their brewing scene can be considered complete without a visit to Blackrocks Brewery. So what are you waiting for? Get to the tap room as soon as possible and enjoy some of the highest quality beer that the Upper Peninsula has to offer. Prost!
