It took a while to get here, but we have finally gotten to my favorite brewery in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Kognisjon Bryggeri. Although the Upper Peninsula has a lot of great beer to offer, this is the only brewery North of the Mackinac Bridge that made my list of the top 25 breweries in all of Michigan.

They first opened their doors as Cognition Brewing Company in 2015 in Ishpeming, Michigan. Eventually they outgrew the space that they were in and they moved the brewery to Marquette in 2023 and became Kognisjon Bryggeri. Over the last 9 years they have etched their name into the pantheon of great breweries that Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has to offer.

Once inside the brewery they offer a plethora of seating options, there are tables all over the place for your drinking needs. They offer a nice long bar with approximately 15 to 20 seats available for us bar flies. Another feature that they offer is outdoor seating with quite a few tables so that you can breathe in some of that fresh Upper Peninsula air while you enjoy a couple of adult beverages.

They offer quite a few events at the brewery such as weekly live music, game nights, painting classes, and other events. Check their socials to see what events they might have going on during your visit. Kognisjon Bryggeri does offer space for private event rentals starting at a very reasonable price of 50 dollars an hour (Price may change based upon demand). Contact the brewery if you are interested in hosting your next event here.

Kognisjon Bryggeri technically doesn’t have food, but there is an order window inside the brewery for a restaurant next door that is separate from the brewery itself. From the reviews there is also a pretty awesome pizza place a few doors down that you can get food at. They allow you to bring in outside food if you are interested in something else.

For the non-beer drinker, Kognisjon Bryggeri does offer various Ciders and Seltzers for you to enjoy. For people that don’t drink they have quite a few options for soda and other non-alcoholic options.

This is the part of the review we were all waiting for, the beer. Kognisjon Bryggeri offers a lot of taps at all times, right around 20 to 25 different options every time you visit. This was music to my ears, and sheer terror for my liver. On our flight during our visit we ended up getting False Icon- Imperial Brown Ale, Mongo Norway- Hazy IPA, Hushed Electronics- Saison, Oktotenfest- Marzen, Crimson Decadence- Pastry Sour. All of these choices were excellent beers and I would drink any of them right now if they were put in front of me.

The best beer of the trip though was Forest Whisperings which was a Doppelbock. This beer was very malty and sweet with flavors like chocolate and caramel up front and a slight toastiness on the back end that finished ever so smoothly. This is a very dangerous beer, it clocks in at 9.0% ABV, so proceed with caution, this one is a sipper. You wouldn’t believe this one is nine percent because of how smooth and easy it goes down. But it is absolutely delicious, and I hope to come across it again. I might stock my entire fridge up with it, bank account be damned.

On your trip to Marquette, if you can only stop at one brewery during your visit, Kognisjon Bryggeri is my recommendation hands down. In a city known for having quite a few really good breweries, this one stands out above the rest. A ta sante!
