In this edition of Throwback Thursday, we will head right down the street from Soo Brewing Company, and we are going to review the only brewery in the Upper Peninsula that I have visited that now ceases to exist. That means no more Throwback Thursdays for the rest of this trip through the breweries of the Upper Peninsula. That brewery is Karl’s Cuisine Winery and Brewery, also known as Superior Coast Brewery.
Karl’s Cuisine Winery and Brewery opened their doors in 2002 in Pickford, Michigan. The small restaurant sold delivery and take-out food to nearby schools and local businesses. They eventually moved to their Sault Ste. Marie location in 2015. Within two years of moving to this location they expanded to become not only a restaurant, but also a brewery, winery and they even had a mini-golf course on the property. Karl’s managed to last an impressive 20 years before they finally shut the business down in 2022. The owners do plan on scaling back the operation and opening just a food truck in the near future.
As I said previously they were a restaurant and winery in addition to a brewery. Their menu was seafood centric, and they had quite a few options for their house-made wines. Karl’s Cuisine had quite a bit of seating throughout the place, they even had a few different floors to the place. There was rooftop seating outdoors overlooking the Soo Locks, which was pretty cool. The bar area was relatively small with just a couple of seats at it. Like I said this was more of a restaurant than a brewery.
When we finally visited Karl’s Cuisine Winery and Brewery it was during the pandemic. During our visit, it was apparently obvious that this place was struggling to keep up. They were very short staffed, and even with the short staff, there weren’t a whole ton of people in the place. From what we saw on our visit, it didn’t come as a shock to hear that they would be closing down about 2 years later.
When it comes to the beer, they had a few options that were very tasty like their Basil IPA, High Water Pale Ale, Ashmun Creek Blonde Ale, and Woody’s Blackberry Wit. Surprisingly though, the drink I gave the highest rating to at this place was not a beer but it was their Raspberry Hard Cider. It was very light with a pleasant scent of raspberries and a light rose color. It was very refreshing, and I might have had a few of these while we were there.
Even though they have left the Michigan beer scene, Karl’s Cuisine Winery and Brewery had an impressive run bringing food, wine, beer and great times to the people of Sault Ste. Marie for many years. Prost!
