Recently I ended up crossing a couple of new breweries off the list, both having opened since July 1st of this year, when I had completed visiting every brewing license in the state at that time. The first one that we visited was Summerlands Brewing Company in Holt, Michigan. They ended up opening just 5 days after I had visited every brewery in the state, which means that didn’t last long at all. At least now I am just playing catch-up when I visit new breweries.
Summerlands Brewing Company is a tropical themed brewery. They have an outdoor patio with a bar outside, and quite a few tables for enjoying beverages in the tropical weather of Michigan. They also have inflatable palm trees and all sorts of inflatable island decor outside.
Inside they keep it up with the island theme, all sorts of tropical decorations throughout the place. There is a bar inside that has the potential to seat about 15-20 people, a very spacious bar area. There are also two sections for table seating, one by the bar which has maybe 5 or 6 tables in it. Then another area that maybe has another 15-20 tables in it, which is quite a bit of seating, The capacity for the place was well over 100, lots of room for lots of thirsty drinkers.
They do have a kitchen, so if you’re hungry bring your appetite. When it comes to the Island theme, their food menu also has a lot of island themed items on it. Seafood nachos, Jamaican Jerk Wings, and Coconut Shrimp are examples of some of the island themed foods you will see on the menu. We had eaten, but wanted a little bit of a salty snack, so we ordered their garlic butter cajun fries. I would have liked them seasoned a little better, but they were still very salty and crunchy.
Now when it comes to the beer, we ended up getting a flight of four of their beers. We got their Crystal Dragon ESB, The Rye Peppercorn Saison, Krushable Kolsch, and their Coffee Stout. The Coffee Stout was my favorite on the flight, it was a dark, roasty, smooth Coffee Stout. They also keep up a little with the island theme on their beers also, some examples are Tropical Storm Stout, Cucumber Cream Ale, and Fireside Red.
The only somewhat negative thing I can say about the place is the service was a little lacking. I am not sure if it was due to lack of training, being new, or something else. But looking through their reviews on google, I am not the only one who thought this. They are really new, so maybe they are still just trying to find out the best way to utilize their staff and their area. So please be patient when you visit them as they work out the kinks as they get used to running the place.
So next time you are in the Lansing area and looking to escape temporarily to a tropical paradise for a few hours, put on a Hawaiian shirt, set your watch to island time and give Summerlands Brewing Company in Holt a try.
