Now that we have reached Houghton, Michigan the first brewery that we are going to stop at is going to be The Library Houghton/ Copper Country Brewing Company. They started brewing under the Copper Country Brewing Company name in 2019, and have been producing beer for people to study at the Library ever since.
This is yet another building that has quite a bit of history behind it. The building was built in 1898 and originally housed a cabinet making business. In 1911 it became home to The Board of Trade which was acknowledged as a premier eating and drinking establishment for the next 50 years, but business began to decline as a result of a diminishing copper industry. In 1967 the building was turned into the Library by an ambitious Michigan Tech student. 1995 saw the building destroyed in a fire, but the original gutted structure remained. After construction and remodeling the building opened back up in 1997 with the addition of brewing facilities. In 2018 the brewery was purchased by the current owners and renamed Copper Country Brewing Company.
As you can guess by the name The Library, it looks exactly like a library on the inside. There are books everywhere and quite a few academic related decorations throughout. The only thing that will make you realize that you are not in an actual library is that it is not exactly silent like most libraries tend to be.
The brewery itself has quite a few tables throughout for your drinking and dining experience. There is also a bar area that has approximately 10 or so seats that you can belly up to and enjoy some of your favorite beverages at.
They do offer a kitchen on-site with quite a few options including appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, pastas, entrees and deserts. By the time we had arrived on our visit, the kitchen had closed for the evening. But all the options on the menu sounded very good.
In addition to the beer, they have a full bar with various cocktails and liquor available. Other options include wine, and cider. If you are looking for non-alcoholic options, they offer a few sodas and other beverages.
The beer that I ended up trying upon our visit to the Library was their Sturgeon River Dry Stout which as the name suggests is a malty, roasty stout with a slight coffee flavor that finishes dry. Luckily if you decide you want to enjoy a few of them you can, it clocks in at a very low 4.4% ABV. This is a very sessionable dry Stout.
When you are up in the Keweenaw Peninsula and need to do some research or studying of breweries, take a trip to The Library and start cramming for the big beer exam. A ta sante!
