Now that we have left Marquette on our tour of the Upper Peninsula breweries, we are going to continue heading West into Negaunee and Upper Peninsula Brewing Company. The brewery was established in 2016 but did not open their doors to the public until 2021. In those 3 short years, they have put their name on the map by brewing some of the best beers that you will find in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

The building that they are housed in was originally a slaughterhouse during the industrial revolution, where they processed premium steaks, pork, sausages and more. In 2017 the building was in surprisingly good condition for being vacant for such a long period of time, but it still needed four years of renovations before it was able to open for business.

Once you are inside Upper Peninsula Brewing Company, the first thing that you will notice is that it is a very wide open space. There are a few communal size tables in the middle of the brewery for bigger groups of people, or for getting to know your neighbors or complete strangers. On either side of the building there are smaller tables that are perfect for small groups or families. Then there is a decent sized bar that seats approximately 10 to 15 people. Additional seating options are available on an outdoor porch so that you can soak up some sun as you do some afternoon beverage enjoyment exercises. The outdoor patio is dog friendly as well.

Upper Peninsula Brewing Company does host events including live music, comedy and open mic nights on occasion, check their website or their socials to see if anyone is performing live during your trip to the brewery. They do rent their space out for private events. If you are planning a big event in your near future, Upper Peninsula Brewing has got you covered. Contact the brewery about possible reservations for your next private event.

When it comes to the food at Upper Peninsula Brewing Company, they don’t have a kitchen. But they do offer a few lighter fare options on the menu including frozen pizza, pretzels, and cheese bread. If you are looking for something a little more substantial, they do allow you to bring in outside food at all times.

Now when it comes to the beer that I tried on this visit. On my flight I got their Loop-Garou- Stout, Dew Drop- Session Hazy, and their Sunny Dew- Hazy IPA. But the winner of the flight for me was Against All Odds which is a Biere de Garde- Farmhouse Ale. This was an amber colored Biere de Garde with a slightly sweet, malty presence with a hint of a nutty almond-like flavor. It finished very strong and boozy, this one actually felt stronger than a mere 8.0% ABV, so enjoy this one casually if you come across it someday.

As you are making your way across the Western Upper Peninsula, there is a chance that you might tend to get a little thirsty. Quench that thirst at Upper Peninsula Brewing Company in Negaunee, but please do so responsibly. Salud!
