A newer brewery on the scene in Michigan is W.H. Ales Brewpub in Bay City, Michigan. I visited the brewery on the day of their grand opening on June 10th of 2024. They had a few soft openings previous to a public grand opening, but I went on the day they officially opened to the public.
W.H. Ales Brewpub is located a block away from the Veterans Memorial Park and the Saginaw River in Downtown Bay City. They are housed in the same building that another brewery I visited years ago, Lumber Barons Brewery, used to be located in. The building they are in is called the Liberty Harbor Event Center on Midland Street.
This is a huge location with plenty of seating options. They have an expansive bar with tons of bar seating available. In addition they have a full dining area with at least 40 to 50 tables scattered about, plenty of capacity for people at this place.
Since they do have so many seats for dining, they do offer a full kitchen. They specialize in wood-fired pizza, but they have a bunch of appetizers, wings, sandwiches, soups and various dinner entrees on their menu also. I tried an order of cheese curds while I drank my beer, and they were very delicious. Everything I saw everyone else ordering looked and smelled delicious. I would have gotten dinner here, but I had my heart set on what I wanted for dinner that evening and I wasn’t giving up a stop at Halo Burger for anything. If we had Halo Burger near us, I would be morbidly obese and proud of it.
Now onto the part of the review that we all came here for, the beer. Even for their opening day, they had quite a few options on tap, I would say they easily had 12-15 beers that afternoon. They do also offer a full bar in addition to their beer, so if you are bringing a non-beer fan with you, there are plenty of options available.
I got a flight of beer as I do at most new places. The flight consisted of Bay City Sunset- Wheat Beer, W.H.I.P.A.- American IPA, Union Block IPA- Other IPA. But my favorite selection from the flight of beer was the Stuck Up Stout. It is an American Stout that pours dark black with coffee, chocolate, and roasty notes to it. It also is a very creamy stout, which helps balance out all the coffee and roasty flavors to make a smooth, easy drinking stout. It checks in at 6.0% ABV also, so having a few is not out of the realm of possibilities.
If you have a thirst the size of Shamu and are looking to go out and have a WHale of a time drinking a few beers. Swing on by W.H. Ales Brewpub in Bay City, and swim around in a few pints while enjoying some delicious food. Cheers!
