Unfortunately I had broken the news of Waypost Brewing Co closing a couple of weeks ago on the page. Today is their last day in operation, so I figured that it would be a good idea to give them a write-up before they became a Throwback Thursday article.
This was devastating news for myself and the brewing community. Waypost Brewing Co is the first brewery that made my top 25 list in the State of Michigan, to announce that they were closing their operation. If you can make it out and visit them today, I highly encourage you to do so. We are losing a true beacon in the Michigan craft beer community once the business day is completed.
Waypost Brewing Co opened in 2018 and is located in the Southwest part of the state in Fennville, Michigan. They are located on an expansive property in a country setting with chickens roaming the property while you enjoy your beers. Waypost has been providing the craft beer community with very delicious, high quality Farmhouse Ales for the last 6 years.
On my journey to Waypost last year, I went on a Monday evening. It was a cold, damp, rainy late summer evening. When I arrived I was the only patron in the bar at the time. I got to meet the owners on my visit, the husband, Chuck, was bartending at the time, and his wife, Hannah was busy in the back finishing up a brew day.
The bar area is a smaller bar area, but it is very cozy with about 10 seats at the bar for thirsty beer lovers. There are quite a few tables scattered throughout the facility for your drinking and dining needs. I did not get to experience this myself because it was pouring rain during my visit to the brewery but according to their photos, they have a very nice looking beer garden area for you to enjoy a few beverages at.
Now normally on a review of a place I would go through and tell you what to expect on your visit to the brewery, whether they have food, other beverages, etc. I am going to skip that part of the review for this one, since today is their last day in business. We are going to jump right into the part of the review where we get to talk about the beer.
I have had Waypost’s beer at multiple Michigan Brewers Guild Festivals and at the taproom, and I can say without a doubt that for Farmhouse Style Ales, this might be your best option in the entire state of Michigan. They can easily go toe-to-toe with the likes of Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales, Vivant Brewery + Spirits (formerly known as Brewery Vivant) of Grand Rapids, and Farm Club of Traverse City. This is a brewery that will be sorely missed by the Michigan brewing community, especially if you are a lover of Farmhouse Ales.

Over the years some of the styles that I have been able to try from Waypost Brewing Co include IPA’s, Stouts, Festbier, Kolsch, Biere de Garde, Belgian Tripel, Altbier, Grisette, Saison and many more. Even though they are known to specialize in Farmhouse Ales, they do make a beer for everyone and Farmhouse Ales are not the only thing on the menu.

According to the few beers that I have rated from them on Untappd, my favorite when I visited the brewery was their Festbier. If you have followed my page for a little while, you may have noticed that I have an affinity for Festbiers, and my visit to the taproom was the perfect time of year to find a Festbier on tap. It was a very clean Festbier with a little bit of an earthy mouthfeel to it which gave way to some bready, grainy almost cereal like flavors. Checking in at 6%, this Festbier is one you might want to keep an eye on as you consume it, it might creep up on you relatively quickly, but man is it delicious.
I wish that I was able to make it out to Waypost for their final hurrah today, but sadly I have to work at the brewery today. If you are lucky enough to have the day off and you happen to be on the Westside of the state today, I really encourage you to stop by Waypost Brewing Co in Fennville, Michigan. Today will be the last chance that you have to check out their unique taproom and sample some of the finest Farmhouse Ales that you will find in the entire state of Michigan.
This is one brewery that will be sorely missed in the state, but I would like to raise my glass in a toast to all that Waypost Brewing Co has accomplished in their six years in business. After today you might be gone, but you will never be forgotten. Cheers!
