One of my favorite breweries in the Metro Detroit area has got to be Witch’s Hat Brewing Company out of South Lyon, Michigan. Witches Hat opened their doors in 2011 and has been putting out top shelf beer ever since.

I just took another trip to Witch’s Hat on Sunday. So since it is very fresh in my mind I figured I would type this up and skip it ahead of the other reviews that are pre-typed and ready to send out.

Witch’s Hat is a decent sized brewery with a lot of seating throughout the place. The bar area is huge and can easily seat 20 to 30 people at their very long bar. There are plenty of tables to sit at and enjoy a few drinks. They also do offer a few outside seats that are dog-friendly. Witch’s Hat also has an area in the back that is available for rent for private events and functions.

There is a kitchen with a full menu available at Witch’s Hat just in case you brought your appetite along with your never-ending thirst for beer. They have quite a few appetizers on their menu. The main courses consist of things like burgers, salads, soups, sandwiches, tacos and mac and cheese. They also offer quite a few options for those out there that are vegan.

Now when it comes to the brewery itself. The first thing that you are probably going to notice is their mug club glasses. They are all hand-blown glasses and no two are the exact same. They are all unique, and they work exclusively with local independent artists for all their hand-blown glass needs. Witch’s Hat has thousands of mug club members so their blown-glass collection is truly a work of art. This is worth going to check out all on its own, but then you remember that they serve awesome beer too.

The beer has been extremely solid every time that I visit Witches Hat. From their staples like Sweet Lou- Milk Stout, Three Kord Kolsch- Kolsch, Train Hopper- IPA. To their seasonal stuff Oktoberfest- Marzen, Blueberry Lemonade Gose- Gose, and Demon Cleaner- Belgian Tripel. They also have an entire line of Traxx Night Fury and its variants, which is their bourbon barrel-aged lineup of beers. All very delicious.

But today I am going to talk to you about a taproom exclusive beer that they had on tap Sunday during my visit. As a matter of fact I am drinking a growler of it right now as I type this. It is their Squib Kick- Munich Dunkel. This beer on the first smell does not give off a huge aroma but my god is it flavorful. It is everything you want a perfect Munich Dunkel to be. It is a dark copper/light brown color, has a very malty backbone, and goes down oh so smooth. This will be the best example of a Munich Dunkel you will find in all of Michigan. It is only on tap for a limited time, so hurry up and get some before I buy them out of their supply.

I also want to give a shoutout to my bartender at Witch’s Hat, Nick. What a nice and friendly guy, he answered any questions that we had, and was just a fun, bubbly guy to be around. So Nick, keep on doing what you are doing, you are great at it!

On your next trip through the South Lyon area, if you are looking for a delicious beer with awesome people, stop by Witch’s Hat Brewing Company. If you are lucky you might even get Nick as your bartender, tell him Steve from Bearded Lamb sent you. Cheers!
